Custom Cabinets Bring A 1941 Blue Diamond Bungalow Back To Life Near Las Vegas

Remodeled 1941 bungalow kitchen with custom wood cabinets and black island near Las Vegas

TLDR: Megan bought a 1941 bungalow in Blue Diamond, Nevada, a historic village minutes outside Las Vegas, and rebuilt every inch of it around custom cabinets from my shop. This is one of my favorite projects we have ever delivered, and in this article I walk you through her recorded testimonial: the revision process a self-described control freak put my team through, the island we happily moved three inches after installation, and the details turning an 85-year-old house into a gourmet home. The remodel ROI data behind kitchen investments like hers is here too.

Custom Cabinets Las Vegas: For older homes with no standard walls or corners, custom cabinets are built to the house instead of forcing the house to fit factory boxes, which is how Peterson Cabinet Works remodeled a 1941 Blue Diamond bungalow into a modern gourmet home.

Old houses punish stock cabinetry. Walls lean, corners drift, floors roll, and every factory box assumes a house built square. When Megan bought her 1941 bungalow in Blue Diamond, the little village tucked against the Red Rock cliffs, she inherited 85 years of character no catalog would ever fit. Projects like hers are why I got into this trade.

She recorded her experience after the remodel finished, and one thing jumped out when I watched it back. I counted the word "detail" eight times in a three-and-a-half-minute conversation. No other theme came close. Let me show you what remodeling an older home with custom cabinets looks like when the shop treats your obsessions as the job description.

Why A 1941 Bungalow Demanded Custom Cabinets

Megan's project scope was total, and her ambition for the little house won me over immediately.

"We decided to do new cabinetry in this beautiful house because every inch of this house needed to be redone. We bought a 1941 bungalow in the little town of Blue Diamond, Nevada, which is just outside of Las Vegas. And I knew I needed the kitchen to be the heart of the home and I wanted something unique. I went to Peterson Cabinet Works because I knew they could deliver that."

Kitchens carry the value of a home improvement project, emotionally and financially. The Zonda 2025 Cost vs. Value Report found a minor kitchen remodel recoups 112.9 percent of its cost at resale, the only interior project in the national top five. In a home this old, the kitchen rebuild is where design ambition and resale math point the same direction. You get the room you love, and the market pays you back for it.

What sold her on my shop was enthusiasm, which makes me laugh because she is describing something I have never once managed to hide.

"I chose Peterson Cabinet Works pretty early on because Dave's enthusiasm for his work and his business was just over the moon, over the top. And it was infectious. And he made you believe that all your cabinet dreams were gonna come true."

Revisions Without Friction: The Custom Cabinet Design Process

Megan warns you up front about her standards, in the most charming way possible.

"His team's attention to detail and making sure that I had a lot of revisions because I'm a control freak myself. And so we went through a lot of revisions and there wasn't one time I felt any kind of angst about, oh, it's Megan calling, she's got one more revision to this, she's got one more change order. They never made me feel like it was a burden to do the work that I asked them to do."

Read her words against your own remodel fears. Change requests are where most contractor relationships sour, and she braced for exactly that resentment. It never came, because revisions are not an interruption to my design process. They are the design process. A cabinet design process with 3D drawings and unhurried revisions exists so you land on the right kitchen before the saws start, and my team treats iteration as part of the design consultation, never a nuisance fee.

The selections went down to the smallest decisions, and Megan gave me a line I intend to keep using forever.

"From initiating conversations with his team to picking custom paint colors, to picking the knobs and the hardware, which are really the jewelry of cabinetry, everything was really seamless."

In my experience, "they never made me feel like a burden" is the sentence homeowners most wish they were saying about their remodel. Renovation stress is rarely about wood or paint. It is the fear of asking for one more change. I price patience into every project on purpose, because a client who feels safe asking is a client who ends up with the kitchen she wanted, and that kitchen is the one she tells her friends about.

The Island We Moved Three Inches After Install

Every remodel produces one moment where the plan meets reality and loses. Megan's came when her island hit the floor.

"Whether it was literally moving this island three inches up because once it got on the ground, I was kind of like, ah, I'm just not sure. And they came out and right away, fixed it."

Three inches. Most shops would call the drawings signed and the job done. My crew went back and moved it, because the drawing was never the point.

The kitchen working for the person living in it is the point. She stands at the island every morning. I signed a drawing once.

The same pattern held across her whole job site experience.

"They were always on time. They always cleaned up their mess. And those are small things, small details, but again, Dave and his team, there isn't a detail that goes unnoticed or unhandled. Peterson Cabinet Works was one of the few subs that actually showed up on time, cleaned up their mess, and delivered product when they said they would."

Renovation Stress, Handled

Why Reliability Matters Most In Occupied Remodels

"Renovation of your home is a stressful process and I have to say that the Peterson Cabinet Works team made it a whole lot less stressful."

Remodeling an occupied historic home compounds every normal renovation pressure. A cabinet partner who shows up when promised and adjusts installed work without complaint turns the hardest weeks of a remodel into progress you watch instead of chaos you manage. That difference is worth more than any upgrade on the order form.

The Details: Arched Vanities, Paint Matches, And Smart Storage

Megan closes her interview with an inventory of the touches she lives with daily, and every item on it was a conversation between her taste and my team's hands.

"There are so many specific details in all of the cabinetry, whether it's the arched detail at the bottom of my vanity to the custom paint match that we worked very hard on together in my pantry, to the spice pullout drawer, and even the trash drawer in my kitchen island. There isn't a detail that was missed or a detail that was unnoticed."

Every piece on her list is a custom decision no stock line offers.

  • An arched vanity apron shaped to a 1941 doorway, millwork no catalog carries.
  • A coral pantry painted to a color we matched by hand, coat after coat, until she smiled.
  • Fluted wood drawer fronts and a black fluted island built for the room, not from a spec sheet.
  • A spice pullout in the pantry and a trash drawer inside the island, space optimization engineered by a cabinet maker thinking about how you cook.
  • Hardware chosen piece by piece, the jewelry on every door and drawer.

And she is ahead of a national wave: the 2025 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study found 67 percent of renovating homeowners add pullout waste and recycling storage and 43 percent add dedicated spice storage during kitchen upgrades. Custom cabinetry bakes those functions into the original build, sized to your cookware, your doorways, and your habits.

And her hardware line deserves repeating: knobs and pulls are the jewelry of cabinetry. Get the cabinet hardware and materials and finishes right and an 85-year-old house wears its new kitchen like it was always meant to.

I think older-home remodels are the truest test of a cabinet shop, because nothing arrives square and nothing forgives a shortcut. Matching a hand-mixed paint color and shaping an arch to a 1941 opening takes hours a production shop will never spend. Those hours became Megan's favorite features. That tells you everything about where a shop's time should go: wherever the owner will feel it every single day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Cabinets For Older Homes

Are Custom Cabinets Worth It For A Historic Home Near Las Vegas?

Older homes rarely have square walls or standard dimensions, so stock cabinets leave gaps and forced filler strips. Custom cabinets are measured and built to the actual structure. With minor kitchen remodels recouping 112.9 percent at resale per Zonda's 2025 report, the investment case is strong on top of the fit case.

How Many Design Revisions Do I Get With Custom Cabinets?

At my shop, revisions continue until the design is right. Megan describes numerous change requests across her Blue Diamond remodel with zero pushback from the team. The design phase exists to absorb changes before construction, where they cost nothing but drawing time.

What If I Want Something Changed After My Cabinets Are Installed?

Talk to your shop. When Megan second-guessed her island position after installation, my crew returned and moved it three inches without drama. A local workshop with its own installers handles post-install adjustments a shipped-cabinet reseller physically cannot.

What Storage Features Should I Build Into A Kitchen Island?

Megan's island includes a dedicated trash drawer, and her pantry adds a spice pullout. Houzz reports 67 percent of renovating homeowners add pullout waste storage and 36 percent add deep drawers. Plan storage during design so it lands inside the cabinetry, never bolted on later.

Does Peterson Cabinet Works Serve Blue Diamond And Other Outlying Communities?
