How A Las Vegas Interior Designer Chose Custom Cabinets For A Showroom Built To Be Touched

Interior designer Val Callais seated in front of the custom white oak materials library at Aspire Design Studio

TLDR: Val Callais, lead interior designer at Aspire Design Studio in Las Vegas, needed a materials library where clients handle every sample by hand. She vetted the market, hired my shop, and asked us for one thing we had never built before. In this article I share her recorded testimonial: why a design professional picks one custom cabinet maker over the rest, what happened with the rolling library ladder, and how the finished cabinetry became the centerpiece of her showroom. The trends data behind her choices is here too.

Custom Cabinets Las Vegas: Interior designers choose Peterson Cabinet Works for custom cabinets because the shop contributes design ideas of its own, hits every stated deadline, and builds one-of-a-kind pieces like rolling library ladders with matched antique brass hardware.

The hardest client my shop will ever face is another designer. A homeowner forgives small misses. A working interior designer bills for taste, sees every reveal, and compares my work against every trade she manages. So when a designer chooses us for her own showroom, I take it as the highest grade we get.

Val Callais runs interiors at Aspire Design Studio, a Las Vegas architecture and interior design firm. Watching her recorded interview back, I counted nine mentions of details, deadlines, and vision. Those three words are the whole job, honestly. Her story shows you what a trained eye checks before trusting a cabinet maker, and what it looks like when the shop clears the bar.

Why A Design Firm Invests In Custom Cabinets For Its Showroom

Val's brief was specific, and I loved it from the first meeting. Aspire's new showroom needed a materials library, a full wall of cabinetry holding every sample a client considers for their home.

"We were working on a new showroom which we wanted to have a material library so that we could host all of our samples, textures, finishes that clients can come in and touch and kind of have a tactile experience with."

Touch sells materials. A sample board on a desk reads flat. A library wall invites clients to pull, compare, and choose with their hands. The industry is moving toward storage working this hard everywhere: in the NKBA 2025 Kitchen Trends Report, 87 percent of design professionals said clients want pantries concealed behind cabinet doors, and 59 percent named white oak the preferred cabinetry look. Val's library wall, built in warm white oak, a wood type leading designer demand, with concealed storage solutions behind flat fronts, sits exactly where professional taste is heading.

How she found us matters to your own search, and it made my whole team's week.

"I was shopping for a cabinetry partner and Peterson is the only cabinetry person in Las Vegas that came up with a five-star review so naturally I wanted to speak with them."

When Your Custom Cabinet Maker Improves A Designer's Vision

Here is the moment worth the whole interview to me. Val walked in with a trained vision, and my designers earned the right to add to it.

"Obviously I have a leg up on design because I'm an interior designer but being that Peterson is a cabinetry designer specifically they were able to pitch some ideas to me that actually took the cabinetry to the next level and kind of exceeded my expectation and my vision."

Those ideas were concrete, not decorative talk. Here is what my team added to Val's original brief.

  • Built-in lighting inside the shelving so every sample reads true under the same light.
  • Angled catch-alls sized to hold tile, stone, and fabric samples without tipping.
  • Concealed storage solutions behind flat white oak fronts for overflow stock.
  • A rolling library ladder, a first for our shop, so the full wall stays reachable.
  • Antique brass fittings matched across the whole installation, down to the bolts.

"They gave me a lot of details and a lot of additional pieces that I hadn't initially thought of. So like the built-in lighting, the angled catch-alls for all the materials, that is a lot of their ideas that really impacted their overall design in a positive way."

This is the test I encourage you to run on any shop you interview for a cabinet design consultation. Bring your idea and listen for what comes back. A box builder takes your sketch and quotes it. A cabinetry designer studies how the piece will live, then adds function you never thought to request. One of those companies deserves your project.

In my view, "exceeded my vision" from a working interior designer is the finest compliment in this entire testimonial series. Designers guard their vision professionally, and they should. Earning the trust to add to it means my team spoke her language: function, light, and proportion. We spend real hours in design reviews before anything gets cut, and moments like this are exactly why.

The Custom Library Ladder Test: Building What Has Never Been Built

Then Val asked for something outside our catalog. A rolling library ladder for the materials wall, finished in antique brass. I will let her tell it.

"I asked them to design a custom library ladder, which I guess is something that they had never done before but they did not shy away from the challenge. They put together some drawings for me to look at, they even went as far as to do all the antique brass fittings that I asked for and it matches all the way across the materials library even down to the bolts."

Down to the bolts. She checked. Designers always check, and honestly, I hope you check too. Cabinet hardware consistency at the fastener level is the kind of detail most shops skip because almost nobody looks. The ones who look are the ones worth building for.

"A lot of other people would not pay that much attention to detail and that really impressed me."

The market prices this level of finish for a reason. National cost data from HomeAdvisor puts custom cabinetry at $500 to $1,200 per installed linear foot precisely because true luxury cabinet work includes engineering one-off millwork, matching specialty materials and finishes, and solving problems no stock line addresses. When a shop accepts a piece it has never built and delivers it matched to the bolt, you are seeing what the custom premium buys.

Respect On The Job Site

What Install Day Reveals About A Cabinet Company

Install day tells you who a company is. Val's description of my crew is short, and it is exactly what I train for.

"They kind of came in, they told me what they were going to do, they asked permission to be in the space and they got in and got out."

Asked permission. In her own showroom. Small courtesies at install scale up: a crew respectful of a designer's space will be respectful of your home, your floors, and your family's morning routine.

Deadlines, Drawings, And Custom Cabinets Delivered On Schedule

Designers juggle client expectations for a living, so a missed trade deadline lands on them twice. Val's schedule report is the one I hold my production team to.

"They are very, very transparent with their deadlines, when they plan to install, when they'll have drawings ready for you to look at and they never missed a deadline so that was really fantastic."

And the result now carries her showroom.

"It is the space, it is the prime focus of our showroom and it is what holds all of our material samples so yeah, it is definitely the centerpiece of the showroom."

Visitors react the way she hoped, which means the piece is doing its real job: selling her firm's taste the moment people walk in.

"The feedback from anybody, anybody who comes in the showroom is overwhelmingly positive so usually it's 'Wow, that looks so amazing' or 'Oh my gosh, when did you guys get this done? Who did it?'"

I believe a showroom centerpiece is the hardest brief in cabinetry. The piece has to perform as furniture, architecture, and marketing all at once, and it gets inspected daily by design-literate visitors asking who built it. Val bet her showroom's first impression on my shop's workmanship. Bets like that are why we sweat the bolts.

The Custom Cabinet Partner Las Vegas Designers Keep On Speed Dial

Val's closing line settles the partnership question better than I ever will.

"I would absolutely work with Peterson Cabinets Works again, in fact, they are my primary go-to cabinetry people and I would recommend them to literally anyone."

My team builds commercial and residential cabinetry from our own Las Vegas workshop: showroom walls, custom office cabinets, retail displays, kitchens, and built-ins and custom storage. We collaborate directly with interior designers, contractors, and architects, presenting 3D drawings before construction and handling the full installation service with our own crew. Every piece is built fully assembled in town, which is how a first-time request like a brass-fitted library ladder ships matched down to the bolts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Designer Custom Cabinets

Do Custom Cabinet Shops In Las Vegas Work Directly With Interior Designers?

The established ones do. We collaborate with designers, contractors, and architects, contributing cabinetry-specific ideas like integrated lighting and space optimization details like angled storage while respecting the designer's overall vision. Aspire Design Studio now uses us as its primary cabinetry partner.

What Is A Materials Library And Why Put One In Cabinetry?

A materials library is organized cabinet storage for finish samples: wood, stone, tile, fabric, and hardware clients handle during design meetings. Purpose-built cabinetry keeps hundreds of samples sorted, lit, and reachable, turning a sample closet into a selling tool.

Will A Custom Cabinet Maker Build Something They Have Never Built Before?

A true custom shop will. We had never built a rolling library ladder, produced drawings anyway, and delivered it with antique brass fittings matched across the whole installation. Ask any shop you interview for an example of a first-time piece they engineered.

What Cabinet Styles Are Interior Designers Specifying In 2026?

White oak leads kitchen cabinet demand: 59 percent of design professionals named it the preferred cabinetry look in the NKBA 2025 Kitchen Trends Report. Concealed storage is bigger still, with 87 percent reporting demand for pantries hidden behind cabinet doors. Warm wood tones with minimal hardware dominate current work.
